Hazardous Materials Spill

Code Orange Plan recognizes 3 levels of spill/release:

Incidental

Spill/release of a known/non-acutely hazardous chemical that is contained within the department responsible for this chemical, which can be safely neutralized or otherwise controlled by departmental Staff via department generated guidelines

  1. Notify persons in immediate area of spill/release and Unit Leadership.
  2. Attend to any person who may have been contaminated, with proper PPE.
    • Staff exposed or contaminated with hazardous material will contact employee health’s exposure/injury hotline via 584-8000 and report incident.
  3. Staff should utilize department generated guidelines and/or access SDS sheet to guide use of PPE and clean up procedures.
  4. Staff should notify Supervisor.
Minor Spill

Spill/release of a known/non-acutely hazardous chemical that is outside the department responsible for the chemical, which can be safely neutralized or otherwise controlled by contacting Staff from department responsible for chemical.

  1. Notify the Environmental Services via ASCOM 298-3146 or 298-3147 and Public Safety via phone at Call 1111, that there has been a chemical spill, giving location of the spill and the name of the spilled chemical.
  2. Attend to any person who may have been contaminated, with proper PPE.
    • Facilitate transport to ED if contaminated patient cannot be decontaminated appropriately on unit and/or is in need of medical attention.
    • Staff exposed or contaminated with hazardous material will contact employee health’s exposure/injury hotline via 584-8000 and report incident.
  3. Notify persons in the immediate area about the spill and evacuate all non-essential personnel from the spill area.
  4. If spilled material is flammable, turn off heat sources.
  5. Avoid breathing vapors of spilled material.
Major Spill

Spill/release of an unknown or acutely hazardous substance that cannot be safely neutralized or otherwise controlled by staff.

  1. Avoid any contact with the substance.
  2. Notify the Environmental Services ASCOM 298-3146 or 298-3147 and Public Safety via phone at Call 1111, that there has been a chemical spill, giving location of the spill and the name of the spilled chemical.
  3. Attend to any person who may have been contaminated, with proper PPE.
    • Facilitate transport to ED if contaminated patient cannot be decontaminated appropriately on unit and/or is in need of medical attention.
    • Staff exposed or contaminated with hazardous material will contact employee health’s exposure/injury hotline via 584-8000 and report incident.
  4. Remove all persons from area of the substance including adjoining rooms until cleared by the hospital Safety Officer (or designee) and/or WCFD.
  5. Close all doors to the affected area.
